Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary
As the first and the oldest koala sanctuary in Australia, the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary – a 20 minute drive from Brisbane city – has built up quite the business in animal conservation. On the 11-acre site, visitors are able to walk amongst, and feed, the kangaroos, hold koalas and catch glimpses of reptiles, Tasmanian devils, and dingos. The sanctuary is open every day of the year, with shortened hours on Anzac Day and Christmas Day.
Australia Zoo
The Australia Zoo might be an hour’s drive from Brisbane, but it has such a great vibe for children that it should be mentioned in the family-friendly list. The Australia Zoo was made famous because of the Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, and his legacy now lives at the zoo through the work of his wife and children. Streets Beach
Since the Brisbane River is no place for swimming, the man-made lagoon of Streets Beach is the perfect place to take children on a warm day. Full of clear water and sandy beaches, the beach screams for a healthy dose of sunscreen and a blow-up raft.
